ABOUT THE OWNER, ROB KALABUS

While most kids grumble at being told to mow grass as part of their weekly chores, I started a lawn mowing route at the age of 10, with five weekly customers. This helped me earn enough money to buy a “Honda Spree” that I wanted so badly by the end of summer 1989.

My dad let me use our family’s Honda push mower and Stihl trimmer and blower, and I learned to do the preventative maintenance for them to keep them running. I enjoyed working outdoors and after done with the day’s work, appreciating what I accomplished. The appreciation of a great looking lawn never left me and while finishing college and working at a golf course I started to learn about the equipment that was used in maintaining pristine turf.

After graduating with a B.S. from SIUE in business administration with minors in marketing and finance, I began my first career as an insurance broker for nine years. I enjoyed helping people but wearing a suit everyday was getting old!

Springfield Mowers Owner

In 2012 with a family of my own, I felt I needed a change and began looking for something that I would really enjoy. I stumbled across a branch manager position at German Bliss Equipment in Springfield, IL. It was very different compared to selling insurance and investments, but I could ditch the suit for blue jeans and start doing something I was passionate about - so I applied. I was hired and immediately started using my previous experience of running an insurance office. I was then able to incorporate my love of being outside and turf equipment to grow the Springfield branch to having the highest market share for Kubota tractor sales in the area.

After four seasons, each improving from the previous, the owner decided to concentrate on the other two locations of German Bliss and the unexpected decision was made to close the Springfield branch. This forced me to make one off the biggest choices in my life.

Turning to my wife Stephanie, and our faith, we made the decision to open our own dealership to fill the void that had had been left in Springfield. Building from my previous four years of experience managing a power equipment dealership, I brought two laid off employees from German Bliss Equipment with me, and with a lot of hard work in 30 days, Springfield Mowers and Power Equipment, LLC was open!

Having figured out that the power equipment business is a customer service business first, and retail business second, we pride ourselves on doing things a bit different than our competitors - and the industry for that matter.
